Live Drawing

Live Drawing

For this week, it is all about how fast and quickly you can capture moving objects, primarily focused on human. It’s a completely a different experience compare to last week’s task which was drawing a still object creating shadow to express 3D view. Since it was motionless object, it was easy to focus on and we can spend more time to give more detail on the object we were drawing. It’s been a while since I have drawn any moving objects which made 30minutes of my time drawing people outside was quite difficult but as soon as I have gained what I have forgotten before (quick drawing skill), it became more natural as I drew more figures.

As always, I started off with fast sketches of people walking on the street but with pencil, it couldn’t meet my standard and there just was not enough time to put enough detail of the figure which drove me crazy. Also, for using pencil, it created smudges all over which was rather annoying and understood why smudging is a bad habit to have.

After unsuccessful attempt of using pencil, I have moved on to using pen even though I am not exceptionally good at. Despite of being in a disadvantage of using pen which I’m not comfortable at, outcome of my drawing was better than drawing with pencil, maybe it had to do with how much pressure I need to put when I draw.

This task was not about how detail you can draw but how fast you can capture person’s movement within short space of time. Its purpose was to increase our fast-sketching ability to draw the basic human figure when we need to. These 3 weeks, we have been drawing in different styles and this is just my personal opinion but this week’s task was definitely more challenging but I have learned more than what we have done in previous 2 weeks.

Tone and Shade

1. White object - Vase - Pencil

2. White object - Vase - Pen

3. Black object - Scrap of paper - Pencil

For this week, we have moved on to putting tones and shades of the objects we have been given and truthfully, it was a more comfortable for me to do this compare to perspective drawing. Also, there is an object that we can focus on which is fantastic opportunity for observational skill.

For the first drawing was white vase done by pencil with different graphite. Personally, the way I drew the vase was surprisingly a successful piece which took about 15~20mins. One of the best features about using pencil is that I can use my finger to smudge the excessive amount of graphite to spread along the object. Despite the fact that smudge is quick and effective, it is not a good method to use since it looks unnatural and harder for us to work later on if it goes wrong.

2nd one is the same object but different material, drawn by a ball-pen. It was rather interesting putting shades with pen since it just doesn’t do the same job with pencil which you can smudge or easily able to put shadow. Despite the fact that I am not as skilled drawing with pen than pencil, it was a good practice and because of this, I would like to use other dry materials to experience differences.

The black object we've been given, due to insufficient amount of black object there were, we drew a black scrap of paper. It was challenging task for our group since the object was more unorthodox compare to other simpler objects (cone, box etc). However, because of its odd shape, it was more fascinating than a simple shaped cone or box; I was more focused on the black paper than the vase I was drawing before. Despite the fact it was rather stressful and challenging, I have learned more from drawing this unorthodox shaped paper than dull looking objects.

Computer Arts Practice Practical

1. Side view of Abertay University Library

2. Side view of Abertay University

3. Glasgow Street View (taken by me)

4. Drawing from the Photograph

First drawing of the perspective view is the side view of the library but with a very limited selection of drawing implements (unfortunately, 1 pen and pencil), it was difficult to produce more defined lines. Also, I haven't practiced drawing in quite a while and it ended as a quick sketch but realised some of the things which I have done wrong and moved on to the second drawing, which is a side view of Abertay University. Moreover, while I was drawing, I had A6 sketchbook and due to its small size, it was surprisingly difficult to draw a building with huge scale. If I had at least A4 size sketchbook, it would have been easier for me to form perspective view of the building I was drawing.

The second drawing, using the same tools, was more successful compared to the first one. There were more interesting features such as curved angles to pop up the corner of the building and shadow to create the 3D side of the building. Despite the fact that it’s better than the first drawing, the way I drew the lines were unstable and too messy. From this drawing practice, I will pick up how to draw in a more effective and less time consuming way.

The picture was taken by me while I was living in Glasgow, learning basic form of art and while I was reseraching for my project, it was good scenery and took this photo on a 1 minute exposure rate. In the end, it turned out shockingly well.

Last drawing was done after the practical session to improve my perspective drawing even further since I was not satisfied with my 2 previous drawings. It was drawn on A4 sketchbook and done within 4~5mins as a quick sketch but I was more confident at this drawing because I had more equipment than before, for example, variety of graphite to create tones and the photograph I can concentrate on. Even though there was not much sense of depth since it was a huge scaled environmental photograph rather than one specific building with more details. However, it was a good experience to draw an entire environment in a perspective view to know the difference between drawing one object and entire environment.
